This Moray Maras salt mine is a fantastic half day tour to explore part of the Sacred Valley. You will see amazing views of the Urubamba mountain range, Mount Veronica and the green valleys of the farms. On this half day tour you will learn about agriculture, textiles and the history of the Incas.
We will pick you up from your hotel at around 8am to start our tour of the Moray Maras Salt Mines and drive to the Agricultural Laboratory in Moray. This beautiful journey takes approximately one hour and 20 minutes. On the way you will see the snow-capped peaks of the Andes, lush yellow wheat fields and some villages. Finally you arrive at the fascinating terraced landscape of Moray. Moray boasts three amphitheatre-like terraces built by the Incas. Carved deep into the earth in the shape of a bowl, these terraces were thought to be used to determine the optimum conditions for growing crops.
When you are finished exploring Moray, head about two miles away to the salt mines of Maras. This village is known as a former salt production centre and is thought to date back to pre-Incan times. There are over 3,000 salt pools carved into the mountainside that are filled daily by a stream of water. This spectacular area is perfect if you want to see something different from the ruins.
Chinchero is a small Andean Indian village located at 3,762 metres on the windswept plains of Anta, about 30 km from Cusco. There are beautiful views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas, with the Cordillera Vilcabamba and the snow-capped peak of Salkantay dominating the western horizon. Chinchero is said to be the mythical birthplace of the rainbow. Its main tourist attraction is its colourful Sunday market, which is much less touristy than the one in Pisac.
This market is held every Tuesday, Thursday and Sunday, but if you don’t go on one of these days, there is a smaller textile centre that is open every day. Here you can see a demonstration of how to make beautiful, natural alpaca sweaters. Finally, you can visit the famous Roman Catholic church built over the Inca palace.
After your visit, you will return to the city in time for lunch.
