Cusco – Perú.
The Ausangate Trek offers a true wildlife experience and is the most challenging hike offered in the Cusco region. This is a great trek for nature lovers, you can see a lot of wildlife. The scenery in this part of Peru is very impressive: snow white peaks and bright blue and green lagoons are just some of the scenic highlights. There is also a cultural element to this Ausangate trek as it passes through several isolated Andean communities where the way of life has changed little since the reign of the Incas.
We will pick you up at 06:00 am at your hotel and drive by private van to Tinki, where we will get off to stretch our legs and visit the Tiki village, where we will see the people dressed in their traditional costumes. We will then drive for about an hour on dusty and bumpy roads. When we arrive at the start of our hike, we will have our delicious breakfast and then meet our riders. We will start the trek from Upispampa, passing through many remote villages with numerous stream crossings until we reach the small town of Upis. The trail is almost flat, with some ups and downs. We will walk for about three hours until we reach our campsite. There our private cabins await us where we will spend the night. Our cook will prepare a delicious lunch. After enjoying our meal, you will have the option to hike to Upis Lake, which takes two hours round trip. The trail to this beautiful lake is flat for about 40 minutes and the last 20 minutes are a gradual climb. After returning from the lake, we will enter our cabins, where we can sit and enjoy tea while contemplating the impressive Ausangate through the window. Then we will have dinner and go out to enjoy the first starry night, which you will not forget.
We will wake you up at 05:00 a.m. with coca tea or coffee, which will be delivered to your cabins, and we will serve you a delicious breakfast for the day. In the morning we will start our hike to the Arapa Pass (4968 m). On the way we will observe local farmers and alpacas, the snow-capped Ausangate to our left, and we will have an English-speaking guide who will explain all about the flora and fauna and talk about the scenery along the way. If we are lucky, we may see condors, chinchillas and vicuñas. We will also enjoy colorful lakes and arrive at our camp at Puca Cocha where we will be surrounded by high mountains and incredible hanging glaciers – listen to the glaciers crashing into the lagoons below! As usual, tents will be set up in the mountain huts for us to change, take a nap and have lunch. Since this camp is close to the Puca Cocha Lake, we will visit it and see many ducks, Andean geese and many other birds. Then we will have dinner in our dining room built with stones and mud.
Today is a difficult day, starting with the Puca Cocha pass (5051), with the colorful mountains that surround it. From there, you will have a spectacular view of the Ausangate mountain and the colorful glacial lakes. Then, you will enter the Red Mountain valley, an untouched landscape with vivid colors everywhere, and you will see llamas eating grass right near you. Then we will have lunch in our dining room, where we will spend two days on our Rainbow Mountain. After lunch, we have to climb the second pass, called Warmi Saya Pass (15 090 ft/4500 m/14 000 ft), from where you can see this amazing rainbow mountain in the distance, but you’re not there yet! From this place, we will descend to go around the lake and continue walking through a Peruvian plain until we reach our campsite. If time permits, we will go to Rainbow Mountain to watch the sunset.
Today is the day you have been waiting for. We will wake you up at 06:00 with a coca tea and take you to your tent. You will then hike for about 45 minutes to Rainbow Mountain. The time will depend on your walking speed and the weather conditions. After enjoying Rainbow Mountain for about an hour, we will visit Red Valley which will take another 30 minutes. Afterwards we will go to the bus station to pick up our van. After our last dinner we say goodbye to our driver and cook and return to Cusco where we drop our client off at his hotel at around 3pm.
