Pallay Punchu Full Day Tour Overview

The Pallay Punchu Full Day Tour from Cusco takes you to one of the most striking colorful mountains in the Peruvian Andes. Located near the town of Layo in the Cusco region, Pallay Punchu is famous for its sharp, colorful mountain formations that resemble a traditional Andean poncho. The route also offers spectacular views of the surrounding highland landscapes and Langui Lagoon.

This full-day excursion combines scenic travel, a rewarding high-altitude hike, and an opportunity to experience a less conventional destination in southern Cusco. The tour includes transportation from Cusco, a professional English- and Spanish-speaking guide, breakfast, buffet lunch, oxygen, and a first-aid kit. Because the route reaches approximately 4,791 meters above sea level, proper acclimatization and preparation are important before undertaking the hike.

Pallay Punchu Full Day Itinerary

DAY 1:Cusco - Cusipata - Checacupe - Montaña de Pallay Punchu - Cusco

We will pick you up at your hotel very early in the morning to begin our two-hour trip to the town of Cusipata. There we will enjoy a nutritious breakfast before continuing our journey to Sicuani and then to the district of Layo, where Pallay Mountain is located.

There we will make a short stop to get to know the village and its customs, and then climb for 30 minutes to the base of the mountain. Then we will begin a two and a half hour hike to reach the famous Pallay Punchu Mountain, whose pigments are due to a complex combination of minerals, sea, lake and river sediments.

Throughout history, these sediments were formed by layers of different lengths due to the collision of tectonic plates in the area. These strips of different minerals ended up rising and transforming into the mountains that we can see today.

Later, this mountain acquired its colors due to the oxidation of its minerals by the humidity of the area and erosion.

The weather in Mt. Pallay Punchu is cold and windy in the morning and dry and sunny in the afternoon.

During the trip you will be able to observe the beautiful landscapes and animals of the area. In addition, very close to the Pallay Punchu Mountain you can appreciate the beautiful Langui Lagoon, which makes this mountain spectacular and a very attractive destination. After the visit, we will descend to have lunch in one of the local restaurants in Layo, where we will enjoy a varied gastronomy based on trout and alpaca.

Finally, we will return to the city of Cusco, arriving at around 18:00.
