Description

Embark on a breathtaking journey with our 4-Day Trek to Machu Picchu, the perfect adventure for those seeking the essence of the Salkantay experience in less time. This expertly designed trek allows you to immerse yourself in the breathtaking scenery of the Salkantay Mountains and glaciers in just four action-packed days.

Your adventure begins with the stunning Humantay Lagoon on the first day, followed by a restful night at the tranquil private camp of Quiswarniyoc. The next day, you will be challenged to reach the summit of the trek: the majestic Salkantay Pass at 4700 meters above sea level, which marks the beginning of your descent to the cozy Chawllay Camp. On the third day, you will discover the enchanting Santa Teresa Valley, rich in local agriculture, and arrive in Aguas Calientes at sunset. This will allow you to enjoy the grand finale of your journey: the exploration of the iconic Machu Picchu.

The 4-day Salkantay Trek is designed to be efficient, unlike the 5-day version, which has a different pace and focus. While the 5-day route allows for leisure activities such as soaking in the hot springs and hiking to Machu Picchu’s Llactapata viewpoint, the 4-day route optimizes your time. This approach omits certain activities to ensure a timely arrival at Machu Picchu, making it the ideal option for those who are short on time and want to experience the natural beauty and cultural richness of the Salkantay Trail and the majestic Machu Picchu.

Itinerary

DAY 1:Cusco - Mollepata - Soraypampa - Laguna Humantay

On the first day of the 4-day Salkantay Trek, we will pick you up between 4:30 and 5:00 a.m. After an approximately 2-hour drive, we will stop in Mollepata for a delicious breakfast and then continue to Challacancha (3,800 m / 12,457 ft), the starting point of our trek. We will hike for about 3 hours to the Soraypampa base camp, located at 3,900 meters above sea level, where we will have a nutritious lunch. We will then head to the famous Humantay Lagoon (4,220 m / 13,850 ft) and enjoy the incredible views along the 1.5 hour hike. The landscapes are lush and colorful depending on the season. You will be able to enjoy the green valleys full of vegetation and the incredible scenery offered by the Andean mountains of Humantay and Salkantay, while our local guide shares his knowledge of history and interesting facts. You will also have plenty of time to explore this unique place on your own. We will descend to our base camp in Soraypampa, where we will enjoy a hot cup of coca tea and a dinner freshly prepared by our cooks.

DAY 2:Soraypampa - Paso Salkantay - Collpapampa

At 5:00 a.m. we will enjoy a big breakfast to make sure we have enough energy for today’s hike. Starting from Soraypampa, we will hike for 3 hours to the highest point, Abra Salkantay, where we will enjoy breathtaking views of the snow-capped mountains of the High Andes, including Salkantay, Humantay, Tucarhuay and Pumasillo (4,650 meters / 15,250 feet). Passing Salkantaypampa and Soyrococha, we will discover a beautiful small lake and then begin our 3-hour descent to Wacracmachay (3,800 meters / 12,470 feet). There we will have lunch and continue our descent for another 3 hours until we reach our campsite in Collpapampa. We will have tea and enjoy a delicious dinner prepared by our cook. Tonight we will sleep in our comfortable domes at the camp.

DAY 3:Collpapampa - Lucmabamba - Hidroeléctrica - Aguas Calientes

After a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast, we begin day 3 of our Salkantay Trek to Machu Picchu with a delicious breakfast. We begin our 5.5 hour trek through the Peruvian jungle, traversing numerous ups and downs. This part of the trek will take us through the cloud forest, where we will discover several coffee, banana and avocado plantations, as well as orchids and many natural plants used for medicinal purposes. We will arrive at our lunch spot to rest for a while and shortly after we will take our transportation to Hidroeléctrica. From there we will walk for about 3 hours until we reach Aguas Calientes. Upon arrival, we will enjoy a delicious dinner at a local restaurant in the village at the foot of the magnificent Wonder of the World. Tonight we will stay at a hotel.

DAY 4:Machu Picchu - Cusco

We will wake up early to visit Machu Picchu, the lost city of the Incas, rediscovered by Hiram Bingham in 1911. We will take a guided tour to explore its neighborhoods, plazas, terraces, and astronomical observatories. Afterwards, you will have free time to take pictures and explore the site at your own pace.
If you have chosen to climb the mountains of Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu, you will do so at the assigned times (6-8am or 9-11am).
In the afternoon we will return to Aguas Calientes for lunch (not included) and then take the train back to Ollantaytambo. During the ride you will enjoy the scenery of the Sacred Valley and upon arrival in Ollantaytambo our transportation will drop you off at the San Francisco Plaza.
